Regional Initiatives
Community Projects
Dedicated volunteer professionals from our Region regularly assist with a range of community projects. From judging science fairs to partnering with the local chapter of American Institute of Architects on their “Canstruction” event, we are always on the lookout to collaborate in the community to advance green building. Our annual Green Apple Day of Service project also puts our Region's amazing volunteers and others out into the community for green-schools projects.
Walking Tours
Our NGC Region offers at least one walking tour per year, and these are some of our most popular events. Tours typically take place in downtown Pensacola and offer a chance to get outside to see green building and development on the ground and in action. Past tours explored a range of issues, including historic preservation, stormwater management, LEED ND, challenges of redevelopment, and more.
Advocacy
The Region tracks government at all levels for opportunities to further USGBC goals in green building and development. We especially watch for local opportunities to make certain that decisions work toward a greener and better community. The Region has been especially active in monitoring the use of BP monies flowing to the area following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil tragedy. We were also successful in pushing the City of Pensacola to create the area’s first green-building ordinance to incentivize green building and development, and continue to work to see the City implement the ordinance.
