In the Great State of Florida, that happens at the grassroots level, in the local communities and amongst people who understand the specific challenges and opportunities of the Sunshine State's diverse regions. Better than anyone else on the planet, those of us who are part of the USGBC know that our buildings and communities define our lives. They are habitat. Shelter. Places for assembly, sanctuary and learning. But they are also our front line of defense in battling climate change and the final piece of a complex puzzle in how we create communities that enhance our lives, not compromise them. The walls around us and the floor beneath our feet, the sidewalks and bike paths that are increasingly linking us together, are all critical pieces of how we are reimagining our lives and our economy. The fact that so many of us throughout Florida have undertaken this quest for a sustainable future provides great optimism and hope. | But hope is not a strategy. So together Floridians act. We build green buildings and communities. We educate others about the importance of sustainability, climate change and green buildings. Energy-efficient, water-efficient, daylight-filled, toxin- and-pollutant-free buildings in walkable communities with access to fresh food and green space, with recycling and composting on the premises. It takes all of us working together to fashion these places that protect our planet and nourish our souls. And we’re creating more of them every day. Ours is an impressive community of leaders and do-ers who are undertaking this critical work. We are engineers, architects and building facility managers. We are teachers, lawyers and scientists. We are business owners, manufacturers, students and everyday citizens. We have proven that, in creating healthier, resource-efficient buildings, we have the potential to change minds and lives. |

USGBC Florida is a statewide movement of professionals, businesses, innovators and community leaders working to accomplish a single bold vision: healthy, efficient and equitable green buildings for all within this generation.WHO WE ARE:
| I believe that sustainable design and sustainable developments are the future we want for all. The USGBC Florida Chapter offers education and opportunities to learn and get involved in green and sustainable design. - NIHAL HADDAD ALWAKEEL Way back in the last century (mid-nineties), we were brought to Florida to lead commissioning for the State of Florida’s High Performance Buildings Program. That program and our volunteer work with ASHRAE introduced us to USGBC. We had been involved in similar programs in Canada and have always been interested in performance. USGBC helped us realize the impact of buildings and the possibilities associated an effective certification program. A few industry professionals invited me to a meeting to discuss forming a Chapter. Then I met Rick Fedrizzi at the Wine Cellar and he twisted my arm, sealing the deal. He’s good at that. Beth and I have been hanging out at USGBC ever since, enjoying the ride: “One Starfish at a Time.” - WAYNE & BETH DUNN |
