Quartersawn American Hardwood in Sustainable Design

This webcast offers the participant a clear picture of the sustainability and beauty of American hardwoods in general and quartersawn hardwoods specifically. The participant will see beautiful photographs of quartersawn hardwoods in application, from museums to residences and restaurants. The quartersawing process is explained and a short animation illustrating the process is shown.

  1. Explain the difference between Plain (flat) sawing and Quartersawing hardwoods, comparing the key benefits of each method.
  2. Discuss the low cost of lumber production and how all byproducts are used, including fuel for the boilers for kilns. They will also understand the recyclable nature of hardwood lumber.
  3. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the kiln drying of hardwood lumber and how Quartersawn Lumber dries differently from Plain Sawn lumber. Attendees will be able to cite at least two reasons why Quartersawn is superior to Plain Sawn in flooring, millwork and cabinetry.
  4. Explain the challenges of certifying the sustainability of American hardwoods. Understand the concept of “sustainable forestry” and selection harvest. Know why there is more hardwood growing in the US now than 50 years ago.
  5. Discuss, generally, the realities of the yield from Quartersawn hardwoods in terms of clear widths and lengths. This understanding will allow the design of projects with these realities in mind, designing as a responsible steward of this natural resource.
  6. Pinpoint on a map the area from which Quartersawn white and red oak are harvested. See the LEED approved 500 mile radius circle from the point of lumber manufacture.
