Expanding their core mission, high performance, sustainable schools can both enhance educational outcomes and catalyze a larger sustainable movement within their surrounding community. Educating and inspiring stakeholders ranging from the school, the school district, and the surrounding community to the city, these buildings and the process used to plan, design and build them can have a much greater impact that transcends the boundaries of the site. Featuring the community engagement process used on two of the world’s highest scoring LEED Platinum schools this session will provide participants with a range tools, resources and techniques to engage a diverse array of community members during design and occupancy.
These high performing schools, located within neighborhoods in need of revitalization and social equity, became the cornerstone of city-wide initiatives. Tapping the innovation of these buildings - from expansive photovoltaic systems and innovative power purchase agreements that transformed an entire district’s inventory to new sustainable streetscapes that help mitigate local flash flooding, this session will also demonstrate how "large scale" thinking can tackle issues directly effecting the larger community. The tools and process used in the design of these buildings provide multiple opportunities for community members to learn, engage and influence design and operation.
Kudos to Auld & White Constructors for being our venue host for the Best of Greenbuild Series!
