Climate change is our shared global challenge. The green building community is making climate commitments on the global and local level and using LEED as a primary tool for meeting these commitments. LEED v4 raises the bar by introducing higher thresholds and new strategies, while the LEED Dynamic Plaque measures environmental progress, including greenhouse gas emissions. The LEED community can accelerate the rate of progress by increasing its focus on existing buildings and allowing more projects into the system and by publicly communicating that individual and shared progress towards greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals.

Learning Objectives:

Identify current climate change policies and goals and explain how building owners and policy makers can use the LEED rating system and performance platform as a tool to demonstrate progress.

Demonstrate how LEED v4's new concepts and strategies drive environmental progress at a larger scale: community based renewables, demand response, embodied energy.

Discuss how pilot credits allow LEED to develop new solutions quickly for the market, such as alternative energy metrics and energy performance measuring.

Describe how the LEED performance platform and LEED v4 address metering, monitoring, and verification to enable projects to quantify and compare building performance.
